mallorca/majorca/mayorca/craggy island

When we went to mallorca/majorca/mayorca/craggy island we had lots of fun and food and it was much warmer than ireland and we enjoyed swimming at the beach and in the pool (even malachy swam). One of the days we were there we went to mini-golf (NO COMMENT). After mini-golf we went to Malachy's favourite restaraunt in the world...............TABU where you could get a meal, a drink, an ice-cream and a lollipop all for 4 euro on the kids menu. after dinner at......................TABU we went to the beach and jumped off a concrete platform on to the sand on the beach and we saw a slingshot ride!!!!!!!!

A Taste of Home

Imagine our delight when we heard that Joey Jo Jo (love the new name Stuey) and Bazza were coming to the UK for a buisness training workshop. Luckily they had a few days spare to fly over and see us. We met them at Cork airport and drove them to Bob's Lodge via the stunning South East Coastal road. We had a brief reprise of good weather as we enjoyed a champers/beer on the deck of the Cliff hotel enjoying the Irish seaside at Ardmore in southern Co Waterford.

We gave Jo and Baz the crash introduction to Irish culture and environs, explaining that having 'brilliant crack' doesn't mean you remind someone of their builder or plumber, and that if the sun is shining there will be a rainbow somewhere. We also explained that Ireland is perhaps the sunniest place in the world - it being sunny ten to twelve times a day. The proof of all three came about with a wonderful day's golf and revelrie at 'Mount Juliet', as guests of Jo and Baz's local buddies, Bryan and Adrienne. The golf course, designed by Jack Nicklaus, was so beautiful I expected to find lawn bowlers practicing on the fairways.

We decided to take the visitors to see downtown Waterford and do some local sightseeing. We began the afternoon with a nice simple Thai lunch that turned the events of the day rather dramatically as I had another near death incident with the dreadded peanut. The ambulance was slow enough for the others to enjoy their food and shed some tears at the spectacle of an [almost] anaphylactic mother. By happy coincidence one of the ambo's was the father of Niamh's friend Neasa, and the doctor in cas a bloke Dom had worked with at 'Caredoc'. All ended up well, with prompt and competent care via Waterford Regional Hospital...

Spraoi, It's Irish for ... something

Wow, look out Nowra, this weekend Waterford played host to its annual 'Spraoi' festival. Legend has it Spraoi began about 15 years ago because a group of locals were bored on Sundays. Now one of the women tours the world recruiting the best street performers and festival acts, and signs them up to fill the streets of Waterford on the first weekend in August.

We had the good luck of a mostly sunny Saturday to cruise the centre of Waterford partying, people watching, and generally having a good time. There were giant dinosaur like creatures wending their way through the crowds, scary mermaid dudes, wonderful juggling and acrobatic troupes, and funky DJ Hairstylists and the like all over the joint.

Three cheers for Waterford.

PS Imogen missed the excitement as she was over the channel in London, meeting QE2 etc with Elle {Steiner nee Frawley} and Nic.

The most beautiful city ever!!

Above is the family having fun on a super dooper swing in a resort park in Larochette, Luxembourg. We drove over the boarder from Germany in our campervan and spent a blissful week travelling around this adorable country. I have seen quite a few world cities now but I was truely blown away by Luxembourg City, the country side was also amazing...it is a tiny country, rich and powerful. It was so clean, friendly and beautiful. We didn't get great photos (bugger!!)to show how stunning it was, you will just have to believe us about that. As you can see below there was a freaky fling fox in the kids playground at our second caravan park which was situated close to the city.

Below is a view that we especially liked.

We took a train one day over the boarder to Belgium with a one long day pit stop in Brussels. We had a busy day checking the delights on offer..such a Belgium chocolate, waffles, icecream and a cheeky little pissing boy statue (which was a bit over rated). The kids were happy to add another country to their European adventure tally.

Europa in a van

Prepare for images of idyllic family life spent camping next to rivers around Germany, but don't forget to read things are never as easy as they look! I have long believed holidays are best remembered by the misadventures along the way, and if this is so niamh should have the best recollection of our campervanning around Germany. Niamh had expressed some apprehension about the terrors of Customs, and sure enough somehow earned a search in Waterford Airport on our way out, thanks to a chunky belt buckle. After we struggled a long last to our bags in Amsterdam Airport, we were just in time to see Niamh's bag disappearing into the distance on someone else's trolley {well spotted and safely recovered!}Six hours of train transfers, unpredictable bus trips and walks too long for Malachy later, we were settled into our 6 berth van {see photos}. After stopping to gather supplies, we headed off onto the right hand side of the road for the beginning of the 'wrong way round driving in a big bus' experiment. Minutes later we were pulled over by a friendly local, who advised our rear luggage compartment was flapping open - as we thanked the gentleman for his help, another vehicle pulled up, and produced - you guessed it - Niamh's suitcase, which had flown out the door the first corner we turned.

Once we were settled we found the roads excellent, and the people welcoming and helpful, and had delightful riverside stops on the Rhine in Cologne, and than in Heidleberg. The cities / towns were beautiful, and suitably culturally different for our young tribe. Heidleberg had impressed Maggie as an 18 year old in the middle of winter, and we were all forced to highly commend her for her taste - most of the childen declaring the Christmas store the best shop they'd ever seen...

Cologne distinguished itself by having a Cathedral Imogen WANTED TO SEE!!. This famous twin steepled church had a highly latticed design, leaving lots of airspace through which to view the surrounding city as you scaled its 507 {from memory} spiralling stairs. The boys found endless distraction on the sandy beach adjoining our parking space, and some of us were brave {and apparently foolish - we learnt later} enough to swim in the Rhine.

Our home for the best part of a fortnight is pictured below. I have been advised my lack of a sense of smell enhanced my enjoyment of the van. It helped us to enjoy some beautiful countryside, and on our last night in Germany, delivered us to the best meal we have had in many a year - at a very stylish Turkish restaurant in Mulheim. The carnivore in Malachy and Seamus can rest easy for many weeks to come.

Malachy

Hi Lads.

I don't like school in Ireland because, believe it or not, you actually get homework.
There are five other boys in my class and two of them are annoying and I don't like them at all. Irish hold grudges for a long time and they are racist, especially to Polish.

Last week Niamh and I went to Drama Camp which was good and there were some really nice people there. We got wrapped up in paper and waved to the cars. Also, we wrapped up our teachers car and painted it, and then paraded around the streets all wrapped and painted. I acted as Graham in the well known play "Hansel and Gretel- Graham" and got to beat up a witch. Drama Camp was really fun.

Bob's Lodge has a really cool garden. There is not much to do here now that we have been living here for 7 months. So all I do is play Ninentendo and lie around.

The 2 month holiday in Ireland is great. I have recently been to germany, holland , belgium and Luxmbourg. I also went to France a little earlier in the year. Euro Disneyland was a lot of fun.

My neighbours little boy called Eoin (Owen which is John in irish)is hillarious and does too much running around for me.
